King of Cocaine: The Life and Times of Jerry Anderson

Jerry Anderson grew up in the Tindall Heights neighborhood of civil rights era Macon, Georgia. Raised with his five brothers and sisters and a single mother, the family struggled to make ends meet. Jerry found a way out of poverty through football, but just as his college football career was set to begin Jerry found out he had a baby on the way. Jerry gave up his football career for his family and came home to a minimum wage job. When a friend introduced him to selling cocaine as a way to make money Jerry’s life took a turn that led him from Macon to California to Philadelphia and ultimately back home to become Macon’s King of Cocaine. With Christmas bonuses for his workers, business startup money in his community, and clothes, school supplies, and food for local kids Jerry became idolized in his community. The U.S. government caught on and took down his enterprise, sending him to prison with a life sentence for his non-violent drug crimes. He was granted clemency by President Obama after serving nearly 30 years for his crimes, and he was ultimately released when his sentence was reduced by a federal judge due to criminal justice reform efforts. He is telling his story now as a cautionary tale of how poverty can lead to crime and why we shouldn’t throw away the key for non-violent drug offenders. Jerry and his wife work tirelessly in their community to keep youth from going down the same path that caused Jerry to lose so many years of his life. His story is truly a story of human redemption.
