My objective is not to make ideal parents but to keep parents, teachers, day care personnel, camp counselors, and others alert to obstacles that frequently are overlooked. A child bears the burden of making sense out of the enormous amount of conflicting data around him in order to survive. • He does not need the added burden of deliberate false data, let alone ridicule for having accepted that data. • He does not need to have lies disguised by different terminology (fib, teasing, kidding, a joke, etc.). • He does not need appeals to his curiosity that result in betrayal, with or without impact (“Want me to tackle you?” stated with enthusiasm, and of course the child wants to know the meaning of the word). • He certainly does not need your refusal to hear him. By no stretch of the imagination is any betrayal humorous. This work is not for the faint-hearted parent. It is for those who perceive that many of today’s children face problems that are not being understood – parents who will do whatever it takes to remedy this.
