Ten years ago Kurt and Sharon each checked the 65+ age box. Their “Senior Independent Living” Center has plenty of senior wrinkles, repeated and worn out old stories, and quiet fears about aging and dying. All these leave Kurt the retired pastor and Sharon the retired nurse feeling barely “independent.” The mental lint of choices like “mashed or baked potato for your lunch tomorrow” and halls filled with “Muzak of your Life” have leeched the joy, purpose and meaning from anything resembling “living.” To save their sanity and souls Kurt and Sharon escape——all the way to Spain’s “Way”, the Camino de Santiago. This 1000-year-old pilgrims’ path silently welcomes the 2 white-haired Americans to join walking, despite bad knees and faded strength. The multi-national, multi-aged pilgrims of all sorts on “The Way”——the lost (like a cat they meet), the disconnected (a stock broker in a failing marriage), the belittled (like the devout and the artistic)——all of these fellow walkers give Sharon’s rickshaw second looks as they chat with and encourage her as well as Kurt the puller. Like everyone crunching on the gravel across Northern Spain for 100s of kilometers, Kurt and Sharon slowly find themselves living again. Even their fears about what will happen at journey’s end, let alone where they will live, cannot hide their growing sense of “mattering” to others. They also become conscious of how they matter to each other, as a couple whose long relationship might even hold a love they have each held inside for too long.
