Enslaved, orphaned, and alone, Ezekiel battles a hopelessness that threatens to overwhelm him. He is property, his fate decided by the man who owns him, his value measured in the amount of tobacco he tends on his master's Virginia plantation. Until he meets Maddy, whose love and patience help Ezekiel believe that a future of their own is possible. When that future is threatened, Ezekiel is forced to run for his life, leaving Maddy behind. Committed to reuniting with his family, Ezekiel joins the Union army, intent on fighting for the future he and Maddy imagined. Christian Fleetwood is man intent on proving that he is capable of more than what society expects or permits Black men to achieve. Fleetwood has advantages few Black men could hope to experience. Still, his ambition stymied by the pervasive racism of the day, Fleetwood is anxious to prove himself. He dreams of becoming a commissioned officer, of being recognized as a leader of men, to be known for what he can do, not limited by the color of his skin. Brought together by war, Fleetwood and Ezekiel learn to help one another – Ezekiel by teaching Fleetwood what it means to be a slave and what real leadership looks like, and Fleetwood by helping Ezekiel search for Maddy. On September 29, 1864, the two men find themselves outside of Richmond, ordered to charge Confederate fortifications at New Market Heights. They will charge courageously, risking all they have to fight for the freedom to live their lives as they see fit.
