For more than half a century Joe Morse was a troublemaker -- making "good trouble" as John Lewis would put it. A student volunteer for Mississippi Freedom Summer in 1964, he arrived in Meridian shortly after the KKK/law enforcement assassination of the three civil rights activists James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman, and when the rector of the Immaculate Heart of Mary seminary refused his request for a leave of absence, he stepped off the path to the priesthood to follow his ultimate vocation as a community organizer. His was a lifetime in the forefront, at the grassroots, of the ongoing struggles against racism, war, environmental degradation, violence against women and the struggle to empower the powerless and disenfranchised.This book is Joe's organizing life as Joe saw it, as he told it to his longtime friend and collaborator, Doug Nopar, and in other conversations. From his observation that a stint in a Mississippi jail can be an almost welcome chance to unwind and catch up on reading to his punchy reminder that effective organizing is no route to popularity -- "If you ain't caught shit, you ain't done shit..." -- Joe's observations are by turns practical, inspiring, frank and hard nosed.
