Our Faith: A collection of sermons by Monsignor Donald F. Staib

Experience the depth and breadth of a vibrant and growing Catholic parish community through the words and wisdom of its longtime pastor, Monsignor Donald F. Staib. Ordained a priest in 1961, Monsignor Staib served the Diocese of Raleigh and Catholics across North Carolina as an associate pastor, pastor, Superintendent of Schools, and diocesan Chancellor, among other roles. He holds a master's degree from Fordham University and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Monsignor Staib retired in July, 2020, after serving more than two decades as pastor at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Apex, North Carolina. As the parish’s founding pastor, he led the growth of the community and the building of a new school and church campus. With support from Monsignor Staib and other St. Mary Magdalene Church leaders, parishioner Claire Curliss collected and preserved the entirety of Monsignor Staib’s sermons – more than 1,200, spanning decades – for the parish archives. This published work makes a selection available for the wider church community, with an emphasis on the insights and perspective of Monsignor Staib. Included in this volume is an introduction by Curliss; a biography of Monsignor Staib; a curated collection of sermons and readings for each week of the Church calendar; and an addendum that includes a series of sermons on the church building as plans for its construction were finalized. As Curliss notes in the introduction, this volume is suited for reading week by week, season by season, or all at once. “What I hope comes through,” Curliss writes, “is that Monsignor Staib was always curious about the world, that he saw how modern-day events could connect to the ancient texts of the Bible, and that he was a teacher as well as a priest.”
