Warburton and Willingham. They served as short-term relief volunteers after the magnitude 7.9 Ancash, Peru Earthquake of May 31, 1970. This earthquake, the most catastrophic natural disaster in Peru's history up to that point, caused over 70,000 deaths, 25,000 missing, and a million homeless. The Callejón de Huaylas, with its regional capital, Huaraz, and its many surrounding communities, was the most affected, with many areas either wholly or partially destroyed.
