Pieces of Peace

Sometimes events break the image of the life you thought you would be living. The whole becomes pieces. You are left to accept the unacceptable and gather pieces that no longer fit. Life will never be the same after such an event, the pieces will never make the same whole, but there can be a new picture, a purposeful life and a restored peace. This is that story. It is an account of my journey through the suicide of my 40 year old son, and the death of my husband less than three years later from a rare neurological disease, Posterior Cortical Atrophy. It is not a guide to closure—because closure is a myth when it comes to loss and grief—but it is a journey of remembrance, reflection, a negotiated peace, and lessons learned. It is an exploration of how we learn to survive things that seem unbearable, how we grieve deeply and vividly, how we honor those lost by continuing to live, and how we find pieces of peace and even joy in the wreckage of despair. It is my hope that this story will resonate with anyone who has known loss, anyone seeking solace in the shared experience of grief, and anyone trying to find the plan of a loving God in the moments of questioned faith. Through these words, I aim to offer a hand extended in compassion, a voice that says, "You are not alone, I understand why you feel the way you feel” and perhaps help you find a glimmer of light in the dark corners of your own grief.
