Description
“Retracing My Steps” is a retrospective assembly of memoirs combining reimagined and vastly expanded work from previous collections with new, unpublished reminiscences. It chronicles the journey of a Jewish man who grew up when the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual used by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals described homosexuality as a mental disorder. He covered his fundamental wiring with marriage which, of course, did not work. He became a successful university professor. He lived in a Zen monastery in Japan, and taught briefly in Israel. Glaucoma took away his vision and his career when he was forty-nine. He reinvented himself by accepting ordination as a Zen Monk, without abandoning Judaism. He became a volunteer in AIDS hospices and prisons in California and Texas. “Retracing My Steps” describes his evolution from a frightened adolescent to a productive, resilient octogenarian, concluding that honesty has made all the difference.
