Round by Round: An autobiography

Round by Round originally published in 1940, was written by Dempsey along with journalist and author Myron M. Stearns. Unique amongst the several biographies written about Dempsey, this is the first and takes an extensive portrait of the champ’s boyhood and youth, covering nearly 100 pages of the volume. Round by Round is rich in detail about Dempsey’s life as a boy in rural Colorado, the activities and people who helped to shape him as a man, and his love of the outdoors and early commitment to becoming a world champion boxer. Covering much of Dempsey’s boxing career, in his own words, Dempsey relates his triumphs and failures as he worked his way to becoming world champion. The bouts themselves are covered in a matter-of-fact way by Dempsey along with his thoughts and feelings as he managed to find his way in the boxing world as well as in the public eye.
