Rumor of a Werewolf (Caden Chronicles)

Hi. Nick Caden. Teen reporter, amateur detective, and the only person who has ever been trapped in a cave with a werewolf and spent part of that time brainstorming documentary titles. Wolf It Down. I thought of that one myself. My family was moving to Georgia. They flew back to Kansas, rented a truck, and drove back — without me. Dad put me on a train to Sleepy Hollow, New York — yes, that Sleepy Hollow — to visit my grandfather while they relocated. One rule: stay out of trouble. Come home. Oh, and maybe find out if the rumor of a werewolf running loose is true. Then before I can get settled, I find the Headless Horseman Inn overrun by a group called the '70s TV Detectives. Grown adults dressed as Sherlock Holmes, Jessica Fletcher, and various other characters from classic crime shows, wandering around Sleepy Hollow pretending to solve a murder. Reality TV gone rogue. And the girl running the front desk? Her name is Nancy Drew. She actually owns the place. That last part is the one I keep getting stuck on. Nancy argues like a prosecutor and has an instinct for evidence that borders on unsettling. She made me a better detective. I will admit that once, here, and never again. Meanwhile, back in a rental truck the size of Godzilla, Dad is lost somewhere in Georgia, Wendy is texting me updates, and Mom is in the shower singing I Will Survive at full volume. My family's road trips deserve their own documentary. Here's what really bothered me about this case, and I say this as someone who spent a night in an attic cot with a mouse, no outlet, and a wolf howling outside. There's a thing called the Spirit of the Werewolf. Not the Hollywood kind — the real kind. The kind where a man feeds something dark inside himself until it takes over. Greed. Obsession. The hunger to consume or control another person. Pop calls it demon possession. Sun Bear calls it the Wendigo. King Nebuchadnezzar found out the hard way as he roamed the fields as a beast. I call it the worst kind of monster — because it starts out looking exactly like someone you trust. And now I've seen it up close. Twice. Once in a cave. Once in a mirror. That last part might require some therapy. Or a priest. On a happier note, even though my grandfather is getting older, he's still sharp, proud, and finds ways to embarrass me in front of strangers. Which means he's fine. And yes, there is a wolf-like creature running loose. And there's at least one documented occurrence of a man turning into something he wasn't. So here's my final thought on the case. The worst kind of monster is the one you never see coming. Rumor of a Werewolf. Book 6 in the Caden Chronicles. Careful what you feed the beast. He may turn on you.
