“Russia” is a detailed account of the contemporary situation in the Russian Empire, exploring all aspects of country and life from agriculture and commerce to social characteristics and beyond. This volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in Russian history, and it would make for a superb addition to collections of related literature. Contents include: “Physical Geography of Russia”, “Ethnology”, “Language, Literature and Art”, “Chief Cities and Their Characteristics”, “Governments, Political Life, Church, &c.”, “Agriculture and Commerce, Resources and industries”, “Social Life and National Characteristics”, “A Short Sketch of Russian History”, etc. William Richard Morfill FBA (1834 – 1909) was Professor of Russian and allied languages at the University of Oxford from 1900 to 1909. He was the first such professor in Britain and wrote many books on the subject, including “A Grammar of the Russian Language” (1889), “The Story of Russia” (1890), and “Slavonic Region” (1904).
