Sefer Tagin (ספר תאגין): An Ancient Sofer Manual (Sofrut Series) (Hebrew Edition)

Sefer Tagin(alt. Sefer Tagei, Sefer HaTagin), literally “Book of Crownlets,”is a work of great significance to Jewish scribal arts and considered among the earliest of authoritative works relating to the work of a sofer. Authorship of Sefer Tagin is traditionally attributed to Yehoshua ben Nun, author of the Biblical book of Joshua, though a date of inception under the scribal schools of the proto-rabbinic period is more tenable. Scholarly approximations of the date of composition range from 2nd century to early 7th century. Rav Sa’adia Gaon (882-942) makes mention of Sefer Tagin in his writings as early as the 10th century. We know from this work that tagin, in earlier times, were not drawn uniformly as they now are. A letter could have anywhere from zero to seven tagin and could vary from one instance to the next. Sefer Tagin details all of this. Later tradition, beginning about the 12th century, would be to make all tagin uniform throughout the document and to apply them to every occurrence of the sha’atnez getz, i.e., shin, ayin, teyt, nun, zayin, gimel, and tzade (including nun-sofit and tzade-sofit), each typically adorned with three tagin. This was not at all the practice at the time when Sefer Tagin was written, as this ancient scribal manual will demonstrate. The present work is formatted as a side-by-side translation displaying the original Aramaic and the corresponding English on facing pages.
