He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a law degree in California, where until recently he served as a judicial attorney for the California Court of Appeal and now teaches law. He lives in Los Angeles with singer-songwriter Claire Holley and their two teenage sons. His stories and essays have appeared in various publications, including Shenandoah, storySouth, and Houghton Mifflin’s Best American Mystery Stories. Shield the Joyous is his first book.
