SHRED! Running and Being

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, runner and poet Kevin Carollo struggles to understand and navigate the sudden and jarring changes to everyday life. In hopes of finding meaning and purpose in the “new normal,” Carollo returns to a part of his identity that he has neglected over the years: long-distance running and long-form writing. With the goal of logging a few miles a day, Carollo straps on his running shoes, intentionally moving forward with purpose while processing this new journey through his running logs. It’s not easy. Pandemic restrictions and the harsh, often extreme weather conditions of the upper Midwest are often challenging, discouraging, and isolating. At the same time, Carollo’s personal life is filled with continued questions and uncertainty. Carollo recognizes he is approaching the closing chapters of his career in academia and is discouraged by society’s tepid support of the humanities. He is moved by his partner Lana’s mother Beth as Beth moves through her journey with dementia. Carollo is also acutely aware and discouraged by the socio-economic and systemic issues amplified by the pandemic. But as Carollo continues to push through the miles and the words on the page he recognizes he has always had the tools he has needed to keep moving forward: his relationship with friends, family, and, of course, running. Through that remembering he encourages us and cheers us all on, to keep moving forward, to keep shredding, with whatever strength and effort we may have to offer.
