SIPPIN’ BOURBON IN BUDAPEST: A Cold War Tale of Romance and Revenge

The Soviet Union is crumbling in 1990. A Russian military intelligence officer offers to Charles, a CIA officer, information about a plan by some of his GRU colleagues to steal and sell a number of tactical nuclear-tipped missiles to Egypt. In return for this information, Ivan wants a “free ticket” for himself and his nine-year-old daughter to go to America. Unfortunately, Charles’ wife is killed, as is the Russian volunteer, and Charles is wounded at this meeting. For domestic political reasons, the U.S. President decides to take no action on this alleged missile theft and sale, nor to go bring the daughter out of Eastern Europe to the West. Charles is outraged that no action is planned over this intelligence, despite his wife being killed and so he passes the information to an Israeli MOSSAD officer he knows. This brings to Vienna a senior female MOSSAD official, who had known Charles’ father during WW II, when he was in the OSS in Portugal. In return for the intelligence, he expects the Israelis to go bring the daughter out of Eastern Europe, as Charles had promised the now dead Ivan. Charles then resigns from the CIA and disappears under an alias in Europe with his newly adopted “daughter.” A decade later, his past arises and someone is surveilling him, but who and why? Charles is presented with an opportunity to discover who betrayed him and his wife back in 1990. The rest of the plot is his seeking revenge against the Russian mole within the CIA, who is responsible for his wife’s death, as the story moves from Budapest to Vienna, Sanibel Island and finally a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee.
