WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE
"The more kinds of people you see, and the more things you do, and the more things that happen to you, the richer you are. Even if they’re not pleasant things. That’s living. Remember, no matter what happens, good or bad, it’s just so much — just so much velvet." -- SO BIG
Inspired by the true-life events of Antje Paarlberg, So Big is a Pulitzer Prize award-winning drama that depicts the life of Selina Peake de Jong as she navigates the challenges of turn-of-the-century Chicago, Illinois. Selina, a schoolteacher, is determined to inspire her students to pursue their dreams, even if they are unconventional. When she marries a Dutch farmer named Pervus and welcomes a baby boy named Dirk into their family, she nicknames him “So Big.”
Her love for her son is limitless, yet she is forced to put her own dreams on hold to provide for her son after a tragic loss. As Dirk grows up, Selina encourages his artistic talents, only to see him abandon his passion for architecture to pursue a lucrative job as a stockbroker. Despite her heartbreak, Selina still tries to support her son and hopes he returns to his artistic roots.
However, when Dirk’s own love interest falls for an acclaimed artist – a former student of Selina’s – he begins to question what truly matters in life and what it takes to be happy and fulfilled.
Edna Ferber's So Big offers a deep look into the dynamics of early 20th century America, exploring pressing and contemporary themes of poverty, Americanization, family strife, sexism, and success. With vivid descriptions of the daily life of the lower-class Dutch immigrant community, this novel provides a unique perspective on a society that has long been forgotten. A tale of resilience, love, and the pursuit of happiness, So Big will leave readers thinking long after they finish the last page.
