Introduction to the narrative
Puerto Rico became a colony of the United States in 1898 when the Spaniards lost the Hispanic War against the U.S. We have been a colony of Spain for over four hundred years. In all those years, even though the United States fought a war against Britain to free themselves for the same colonial political condition, they have had no problem in keeping this Island under such an unequal and discriminatory colonial status. But the blame is not theirs only… it is ours too. We are as guilty as the Congress of United States. Even more, for we are the ones most in need of a just and viable solution.
We are not equal, but second-class citizens of the United States. Citizenship means equality. We are not equal citizens as those of any state of the United States for we have no Senators, no Representatives and we cannot vote for the President of the United States. We are, sadly to say it, A PERFUMED COLONY OF U.S.
So, we do not have the same rights, responsibilities and benefits as the other States do. We have a Resident Commissioner with limited voice participation and no vote. It is time to rise up to the future. Let us do what it takes to end this discriminatory, indecent, colonial status. Let us claim what was promised to us by the actual President of the United States when running for the presidency. He said publicly to every Puertorrican that, if we voted for him, he will give all citizens living in Puerto Rico the same privileges, rights and obligations as those living in the mainland. He won the Presidency. Let us claim what was promised to us. Let us claim for self-determination. The lobyists selected to convince Senators and Representatives to pass a law so the citizens of Puerto Rico can choose if we are to become a State of the Union. I do not think that will work!
This idea, is just that… an idea. The responsibility to solve the colonial status of Puerto Rico is a matter of all the political participants in the Island and abroad. This is not a matter for the Statehooders only. The wheels in Congress are moved by the economic power behind the negotiators. Those negotiating for Puerto Rico have no economic power behind them. What could change Congress minds towards self-determination for Puerto Rico is the World Press. Those selected can put a tent in front of the White House, distriubute literature and visuals of every segment of our history. The valiant way our soldiers fought in the first and second WW, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and also in Iraq. Visuals of our scientists, in all segments of life, our sportsmen and sportswomen, in all fields of sports, our men and women in theater and movies, etc. Let the press see us as we are. We will not be leashes feeding of from the United States. We will be a great force working to make America Great for we can do as good as the best and probably better. The time is now to make that political change. But we have not just the rights, but the necessity for self-determination. The world press will force Congress to grant us the opportunity to vote for self-determination.
We must let the World know our history, including the years of total domination by the United States of America.
Our existence is full of history. And that history has not been told as it has happened. We have to let the worldknow everything about us and how it happened. A COLONY IS NOT THE ANSER!
