Description
Test of Strength is a tale of romance and hope during a time in American history scarred by racism and war. The story begins in the year 1838 with a Cherokee girl (Mahala) who has escaped the Trail of Tears. It then follows Mahala’s family, the family that acquired her family’s land, and the family of a slave who becomes a Union soldier through the next twenty-seven years – through the nation’s horrific Civil War. Told through the history of such a desperate time, the story becomes a tale of courage and a tale of hope for all time.
In this novel, fictional characters interact in actual events shaped by historical figures who, in these modern days, seem larger than life. Though considered historical fiction, historical information is presented to provide a framework that facilitates the reader’s understanding and appreciation of the narrative.
