Matilda’s father is a well-respected pharmacist in a small agricultural town in Lithuania. He expects Matilda to marry Eliezer Sheras, the son of the Jewish pharmacist in the neighboring town. But when Matilda leaves home to study French Literature at the university, she falls deeply in love. He is Lithuanian, she is Jewish, and the Nazis are about to invade Lithuania. Matilda is torn between her forbidden love, her dream to publish her first collection of poems, and her sense of duty to her parents. That Unspoken Word is a historical fiction novel based on the diary and poems of the Lithuanian Jewish poet Matilda Olkinaitė (1922-1941) who was killed in the Holocaust at the age of 19. This novel imagines the last years of this talented ambitious young poet’s life as she tells it herself through her diary entries and poems.
