The Barnett Shale Play brought Mitchell Energy and George Mitchell to worldwide industry attention. This attention focused on the understanding of shale and the technology that evolved in the play because of its potential impact on the energy marked. For years the National Petroleum Council has evaluated long-term gas supplies, and demand in the United States, but had not included significant unconventional-gas resources until its 1992 report. In the study NPC included a number of tight-gas-sand formations as well as some shales. Their reserve numbers, while conservative, were large enough to generate interest.
