But the truth also emerges from scattered news—both false and true—rumors, revealed secrets, and satirical writings printed on loose sheets and blindmen’s papers, precursors to journalism, collected by the characters and transcribed into the novel. Alongside Domingos Rodrigues, the reader will wander through the streets of seventeenth-century Lisbon, repulsed by its stench and filth, yet dazzled by its beauty, pausing in its squares and markets to purchase a spice, or in the ill-cooked quarter of Ribeira to savor a delicacy, while listening to the criers and gossipmongers of the capital read aloud the latest news. They will also witness the banquets and festivities of the royal wedding, the bullfights and tournaments, marveling at the splendor of costumes, wigs, and jewels.
