Mass immigration from Norway to North America began in 1825, and in the century that followed, 800,000 - 1,000,000 Norwegians immigrated to America. The Province of Hedmark and Ringsaker municipality were particularly hard hit by America fever. This is the story of an extended Norwegian family from Furnes and Veldre in Ringsaker in the province of Hedmark (or Innlandet as it is now named), whose members immigrated to the USA 1850-1906. We trace their roots in Norway and follow them to their new homes in the United States. Most of them settled in Iowa, South Dakota or Wisconsin, and some of them, smitten with pioneering, moved on to Minnesota and beyond. Wherever they settled, they were community builders. We explore their preparations for this task and some of the contributions they made, particularly in Iowa and South Dakota. We also explore the cultural context for their lives in Norway during the mid-1800s and how the democratization process unfolding in Norway may have impacted their ability to settle into the American democracy as productive citizens. Fully illustrated with 270 photos, 50 artworks and 25 maps and charts.
