The universe was created by the Heavenly Father, who creates man and invites him to have dominion, a kingdom term, over all things. Israel was given the charge to be a light to the nations, and as such was a picture of what it looked like for a nation when she followed God, and also when she did not. John the Baptist proclaimed the Kingdom was at hand, and Jesus said it had come. Jesus taught about this new way of living in the Kingdom, which, if done correctly, would transform people and nations. The parables communicated the values, expectations, promises, and the power of the Kingdom we were to not just accomplish but to live by. The Kingdom of God serves as a channel between heaven and earth as we co-labor with God. Paul understood the Kingdom as making all things, holding all things “that in everything he might be preeminent.” How could something this big be condensed down to a phrase most people think little of when they hear it? I remember stumbling into the Kingdom a few decades ago. It was life altering, city altering, church altering, and even nation altering to the degree that the effects of it in my life are still being felt and discovered.
Why was so little of it taught? I don’t believe it was because people were trying to hide a huge secret – I think they were like me. They didn’t understand it themselves. When the Kingdom was spoken of, it was either something that would be completed when Jesus returned, or it was used to describe how we should all work together in multiple churches. Both of these statements are true, but neither describes, defines, nor prepares a person for Kingdom living. I’m convinced the reason there is so much spiritual futility is because we don’t understand or live according to the Kingdom in God’s royal family.
I’m really excited about this book by Phuc (Frank) Dang. For several reasons.
First, he lives the Kingdom. There isn’t a man or woman I know that loves Jesus more than Phuc. He has one of the most incredible life stories of anyone I’ve ever met. He has come from growing up in the country in the south of Vietnam and fighting starvation with is family to coming to America and finding Jesus. He has pastored churches and taught math, doing each with all his might. This is how kingdom people live.
Second, his resources alone are well worth this book. He brings to the table many great writers on the Kingdom and shows how they agree, disagree, and ultimately converge. E. Stanley Jones, John Bright, Dallas Willard, Jurgen Moltman, Len Sweet, Thomas Torrance, and Alan Hirsch are giants in the study of the Kingdom of God. He has studied them all, along with others. You can’t study the Kingdom and what it means without studying these men and their books.
Third, Phuc is a mathematician. Some say math is the language of God. Right now, theologians and scientists alike are discovering one another in ways they never have before. Science answers the question of what and how. Religion answers the question of why. Each have lived a separate life, but, make no mistake, they are not separate in the mind of God. If Christ is to be preeminent in all things, we must see these two harmonized, not at war. Phuc gets this. He brings his understanding of math and theology together for some surprising and powerful insights.
Finally, I believe that our understanding of the Kingdom is going to grow over these next hundred years, like our understanding of the Holy Spirit grew these past hundred years. God is at work, and he invites us to join him. Phuc provides an understanding of this and helps give us a path of living the Kingdom. You can jump in the deep end of the pool, or the shallow end, it doesn’t matter – it’s all filled with the Kingdom.
