The Holy Spirit in John Wesley's Theology

The Holy Spirit is the focus of this book. For John Wesley, the Holy Spirit is a wonderful source of power in one’s life which he describes as being “heartfelt.” The Holy Spirit brings certain gifts to the believer; and He produces certain fruits in one’s life. Also, the Holy Spirit makes use of the various means of grace in conveying God’s mercy and love to the human heart. The Holy Spirit is working constantly to lead humankind on its journey toward the goal of sanctification and Christian perfection. Unfortunately, Wesley’s doctrine of sanctification and Christian perfection has been ignored over the years by United Methodists; however, these terms are both Biblical and Christian. United Methodists need to have a more appreciative understanding of their meaning and application for today’s living. Arvest N. Lawson is a retired United Methodist minister living in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He holds academic degrees from Hendrix College (B.A.), Duke University Divinity School (B.D.), Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.M.), and Drew University (D. Min.). He made a pilgrimage through England, Scotland and Wales in 1993 following in John Wesley’s footsteps. He is the author of a book of sermons on Wesley.
