The Hope I Hold: Stories of Hardship, Hope, & Humor from the Hollers of Appalachia

As I celebrate my fiftieth birthday this year, I thought it would be a good time to tell some of my stories. Some stories were fun to tell, and others were difficult. Stories of my childhood, growing up in the mountains of Appalachia- a shy little girl, bullied because of my size, who always felt less than in the shadows of my gorgeous mother. Stories of my locally-famous, radically outspoken father and the family business and controversial billboards that once even landed us in the news. Sweet love stories and funny stories of raising kids and bad family vacations. Stories of how mental health challenges have impacted my life. Stories of sickness, death, and smothering grief. And the inspirational story of my daughter's week-long stay in the pediatric ICU, when God gave her a peek into heaven during surgery. I've learned that life indeed gets hard and heavy, but we are not without hope. God sees our SOS and sends the help we need, peace for panic, comfort for hurt, and strength for weakness. So I tell those stories also- how God has been the Hope I Hold when life overwhelms me. And in every story I've told, or will ever tell, God is there- working and weaving His goodness into my life.
