Once there, Bruno manages the Roma Café for Vincenzo and runs illegal gambling. When he needs a new cook for his restaurant, Bruno offers the job to Enzo’s neighbor, newly widowed Nina Taglieri. Nina declines but realizes she must work to pay off Angelo’s substantial medical bills; she accepts the job. Brought together through their shared grief, Nina and Bruno marry. Soon after, Nina discovers he is a member of the Mafia in town. An alcoholic, he beats and abuses her, and she lives a life of fear. As the years pass, anyone who helps Nina finds themselves in trouble with Bruno. Many times, Nina tries to leave Bruno but never succeeds. She even goes to the police. Much to her surprise, a police officer turns her back over to Bruno in exchange for erasing his gambling debt. She doesn’t know who she can trust. Bruno often finds himself in trouble with Mafia don Vincenzo. When someone sends Bruno a threatening note, he vows to kill the author. Nina finds the note and thinks it’s another threat from Bruno intended for her. Will she figure out the mystery of the threatening note? Was it sent by Bruno or to Bruno? Nina is finally determined to leave her husband. How will she get away? Where will she go? What will happen to her family?
