Each of us goes on a journey every night. We are gone about 8 hours; we do not know where we go, though we spend years on this journey. Sometimes we return with souvenirs which are equally mysterious: the fragment of a dream or the tune of a song or a mood change. We may have an unexpected solution to a pressing problem. Aside from these odd and unpredictable souvenirs, for most of our human history we have been clueless about this huge part of our life. Over the past several decades, we have begun to uncover amazing pieces of the puzzle. Trained in linguistics and cognitive psychology as well as adult neurology, psychiatry, and sleep medicine, I practiced adult neurology and sleep medicine in a major medical center for more than thirty years. Because of this peculiar background, I believe I have a unique hodgepodge of qualifications to discuss clinical aspects of sleep. So when I retired, I decided to write this book. My patients, referring doctors, sleep technicians, and I have learned together; I hope the learning we shared may be useful to other people as well. This little book is not intended to be definitive, but I try to discuss key areas of sleep in a format that I hope will be helpful as well as interesting. The book runs the gamut from standard topics like insomnia and sleep apnea to more obscure but still important medical topics like non 24 and shift work. I have included equally fascinating but less well known areas of sleep, such as the amazing Circadian Clock and the body's adaptation to our place in the universe; eating and sleep; and medications for sleep as well as medication effects on sleep. Travel and jet lag are included, as well as perpetually fascinating areas like dreaming sleep. Some things will appear in print for the first time, for example a sleep study illustration of lucid dreaming. In short, I have tried to write the missing Little Handbook of Sleep. I hope you enjoy the read and find it useful.
