The Love Letters of Abelard and Heloise is a collection of the five extant and attested "love" or "personal" letters between legendary French philosopher Peter Abelard and his student and lover Heloise, plus Abelard's introductory Historia Calamitum (published as Letter 1). These were written after the calamitous conclusion of their illicit affair and secret marriage, after both had retreated to life in seclusion and penance as a monk and nun, respectively. The content of these letters is both passionate and erudite, with them encouraging each other in their scholarly work, which grappling with the sinfulness of their past relationship and what it means for their religious vocations. The Love Letters of Abelard and Heloise are filled with beauty, longing, and a profound sense of loss, and are must-reads for lovers of romance, history, and literature. This edition is based on the celebrated translation by English poet John Hughes (1677-1720). Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was a French scholastic philosopher and theologian. He was an influential figure in the development of Scholasticism and is widely considered to be the father of modern philosophy. He was renowned for his logical reasoning and dialectic method, which he applied to a wide range of topics, including ethics, theology, and philosophy. Abelard was born in Pallet, France and studied under Roscelin of Compiègne and William of Champeaux, both of whom were influential figures in the development of Scholasticism. He gained fame for his persistent and witty challenges to the traditional interpretations of Aristotle, as well as his innovative approaches to theology. His distinct approach to philosophy, combining logic and dialectic, earned him the title of "The Master of Dialectic." Abelard's best-known work is his Ethica, a study of ethics and moral philosophy. He is also remembered for his controversial romance with Heloise, which resulted in the birth of their son, Astrolabe. Abelard's works had a major impact on the development of medieval philosophy, and his influence can be seen in the works of later philosophers, such as Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus. Although Abelard's works were largely forgotten during the Middle Ages, he was rediscovered in the 16th century and his legacy has endured to this day. He is celebrated for his efforts to bring logic and reason into the realm of theology, challenging traditional interpretations of scripture and introducing innovative philosophical concepts. His works remain influential and continue to spark debates among scholars. Heloise d'Argenteuil (c.1100-c.1163) was an influential French scholar, best known for her works in the 12th century. She is renowned for her philosophical and religious writings, as well as her contributions to the fields of logic, grammar, and theology. Heloise was born in the French city of Palais in 1115, and spent her childhood and teenage years in the court of her uncle, Peter Abelard, one of the most renowned teachers and logicians of the time. Heloise was a student of Abelard, and was highly influenced by his teachings. She excelled in the fields of rhetoric, grammar, and theology, and was known for her wit, intelligence, and scholarly aptitude. She wrote numerous works on logic, theology, and grammar, as well as letters to Abelard and other philosophical works. Her work focused on interpreting the Bible, defending the rights of women, and challenging the ideas of the Catholic Church. She was an important figure in the development of medieval philosophy and her works are still studied and read today. Heloise's life was tragically cut short in 1163 when she died from illness.
