Description

WHAT IF…your town is secret, and you’re not allowed to talk about it. This true story describes that town, and how it eventually became public knowledge, and, finally, an open American town. This explanatory book makes this once-restricted information available to everyone. It includes: Annotated original news stories. Annotations and Explanations providing historical context. Literary comments and analyses. Comparison to today’s town, which is open and visited by many interested in Manhattan Project history. Project Y was a scientific research project, disguised as a very small military base, disguised as a national forest. This secret place was only 1/2 mile wide and 1 mile long. The roads were dirt, there were no street signs, and the simple wood buildings were built of temporary construction. The talented and tenacious people in this hidden place endured dusty, muddy, and snowy conditions, all under restrictions not known today. After they successfully completed the mission, some did not want to leave this isolated place. They had grown to love its natural beauty, elevated 7000 feet in a beautiful natural forest, with great canyon views. They wanted a town, and they got one! It took a couple years, a bit of ingenuity, and much wrangling, but the town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, became a reality. In this easy-to-read book, I give you the best, and the weirdest, stories of the creation of a town. The book is comprised of original content government information, some say “disguised as news articles”. The original material is now fragile, and only available in one location in the country. Permission is required to access the volumes. The original information was produced by the US government using taxpayer funds, and thus is in the public domain. In this case, the information source is 1946-1948 US government weekly news accounts that only existed for two years. (Books and Works using public domain information can be created and those individual works can be copyrighted.) The original newspaper is tucked away in an archive and is not available digitally. Two microfilm copies are available, if you personally go to the libraries (both in New Mexico). You won’t find this information in any other bookstore. With this book, you can hold history in your hands!
