A TALE OF MISSIONARIES AND MORE As a college student on a trek during summer break in 1996, Matt was wounded in the crossfire of a mountain ambush during the civil war in Nepal. Matt returns to Nepal ten years later to repay his debt to the surgeons who saved his life and to find Kali, the young Nepali woman who was the love of his life. Nobody will tell him what happened to Kali during the battle that swept through the town, and Matt must unravel the mystery. He is now a missionary surgeon, working alongside the doctors that saved his life, earning their trust. As Matt searches for Kali he is challenged to the utmost level of his skill and courage. Will the consequences of Matt and Kali's first meeting shatter the lives of everyone on the team? The Sacrament of the Goddess paints a vivid picture of an exotic part of the world, with an authenticity that springs from deep experience. Elen Turner, Napali reviews Joe Niemczura’s The Sacrament of the Goddess on kitaab.org Joe Niemczura’s The Sacrament of the Goddess is a fictionalized account of American aid workers’ experiences in Nepal. At the heart is a naïve young man with the best of intentions, who finds love and friendship in Nepal. Niemczura’s protagonist ends up working in Nepali hospitals in the small town of Beni (the site of a large battle between Maoists and the Nepali army in 2004) in the Annapurna region. The story is captivating and the outcomes are quite unexpected. The love story is nuanced, and Niemczura’s characters are three dimensional. Setting the action in Beni, rather than Kathmandu, is refreshing and gives the reader an insight into a part of the country that suffered particularly badly in Nepal’s decade-long Maoist insurgency, while Kathmandu was shielded from the worst of the violence. Niemczura, a nurse with extensive experience in Nepal, has drawn on his knowledge of the particular dangers that both Nepalis and aid-workers faced in the more remote parts of Nepal during the war. The over-detailed descriptions of medical procedures aside, The Sacrament of the Goddess is a unique and enjoyable novel.
