Baroness d'Orczy was born in Tarnaörs, Hungary to a noble family. She was educated at home by private tutors and showed an early aptitude for writing. She married Baroness Arminius d'Orczy in 1885 and, following the birth of her first child, moved to London, where she began to write novels, plays and articles for leading newspapers. Her first novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, was published in 1905 and was an instant success. The novel was adapted for the stage by her husband and was first performed in 1907. It has since gone on to become one of the most popular adventure stories of all time, spawning countless sequels, films, and television series. Baroness d'Orczy wrote numerous other novels, plays, and articles, but none of them had the same success as The Scarlet Pimpernel. She also painted in her spare time and was a passionate supporter of women's rights. After her husband's death in 1924, she moved back to Hungary, where she lived out the rest of her life. Baroness d'Orczy is remembered as one of the most influential female writers of her time. Her works continue to be celebrated to this day, and her legacy lives on in the numerous adaptations of The Scarlet Pimpernel.
