The Weight of Air

A new book by M.J. Iuppa is always a treat, and The Weight of Air is one of her finest. Set on her farm near Lake Ontario (aside from a few on Ireland’s Atlantic coast,) these exquisitely crafted, concise poems are full of quiet surprises and keen observations. Both the pandemic and the author’s own health crisis contribute to the book’s twin emphases on mortality and on nature’s bounty. The repetitive isolation signaled by Day into night into the next day pajamas into night / pajamas into the wash and worn again has its counterpoint in the anticipation of new enterprises: She couldn’t sleep, knowing the seeds she planted / yesterday in the greenhouse were starting to / tick-tick in thick black loam— ―John Roche, Placitas, New Mexico, author of The Joe Poems: The Continuing Saga of Joe the Poet andJoe Rides Again
