“Maddie,” Lizzie asked, “how long does it take?” “How long does what take?” Maddie asked. “To get over it. I mean, to not always miss the person who’s gone?” “Oh, sometimes a long time. First you get angry. Then comes the tears. Everyone goes through this in stages. Sometimes, though, people push others away. But they need to know that it takes the love of others to help them get through it.” Lizzie McCarthy, a high school freshman, is not thrilled about the journal assignment her history teacher has assigned. For the assignment they must interview their grandparents once a week throughout the semester and keep a journal of the interviews. Alongside it, she must include a daily journal entry about herself. Her teacher wants the students to look for parallel universes. Lizzie tells her teacher: ‘“Well, I can’t,’” Lizzie said. She didn’t tell him that she couldn’t because her grandfather murdered her grandmother, and she wasn’t speaking to him.” Flippantly, the teacher then assigns her an elderly woman in a nursing facility to interview. Lizzie will get more than she bargained for as their side-by-side stories will reveal much about history, human nature, friendship, and forgiveness.
