Based on a true story, Toy Gun Woman, née Margaret Armelle, was born in 1820 along the Judith River in Montana. Throughout her life, she witnessed the tumults of the Indian wars, the invasion of white settlers, the passing of the buffalo herds, and even lived into the automobile generation of the 20th century. Margaret Armelle Rivet Deschamps is telling us the story of her life, looking back on those perilous times in the early 1800s, when very few white men had begun to come west. She recounts surviving scourges of smallpox, diphtheria, scarlet, and typhoid fevers, as well as the raids and massacres that followed as the white man settled and disrupted the Blackfoot way of life. Twice during her life, Margaret believed she was widowed, and twice Louis Rivet—the renowned trapper, trader, and interpreter—returned: first after being scalped and left for dead, and, on another occasion, after it was falsely reported he had died at the hands of the Sioux. In January of 1870, during her years back in Montana, Margaret and her daughter Louise were caught in the US Army raid known as the Maria's Massacre (aka Baker's Massacre) and taken prisoner. She recounts that her survival was aided by Vital Turcotte amid harrowing times, with temperatures hovering at minus 30 degrees, when the only way to keep warm was to compromise. Reflecting on this, Margaret says, "I was glad I was a woman. I was glad I had something to trade."
