Twisted Creek, California Population 86 The first time we saw Twisted Creek, we knew we had to live there. We bought a house the next day––a house we hadn’t been inside––and lived there happily for the next thirty-two years. Chances are, any photo of Twisted Creek will show Enzo fishing. It might also show a pair of waders tossed on the shore. If the waders were there, it meant Enzo was receiving visitors that day. Anyone could put them on and join him in the water for the best chat they’d have in a month. If the waders weren’t there, it meant Don’t come out here. I’ve got something on my mind, and I need to be alone. (Enzo is Receiving) In small towns everywhere, there’s always one of each. Twisted Creek wasn’t any different. There was one person to chair meetings. Dave was ours. One to fix anything that broke. Always Ralph. One person to explain the science of living by the ocean. Arnie. Virginia organized social events you look forward to, and Sally organized social events you dreaded. And of course, there was one bad guy. In Twisted Creek, that was The Villainous Mickey Elwood. (The Villainous Mickey Elwood Shakes Up the Town) Aunt Anne kept a purse from every city she visited. On the left was a gray leather shoulder bag from Milan. Thirty-eight bags to the right was a woven satchel from Hanoi. But the purse Anne couldn’t live without was the shapeless, scuffed and stained ones she left me in her will. Nothing was to be removed from it until after Larry delivered it to me in a used pineapple box. (Aunt Anne’s Purse) Six nights out of seven, Romi appeared on his fourth story balcony, with his long silver hair whirling in the wind. As soon as the sun dropped into the ocean, Romy picked up his shining brass saxophone and started to play. (Romy’s Greatest Hit)
