Vincenzo’s Last Wish: A Sicilian’s Extraordinary Life as an Immigrant, Vietnam Vet, Naturalized Citizen, and Peace Officer

A father’s dying wish. A son’s lifelong promise. In 1955, eight-year-old Michele “Mike” Salvaggio boards the Andrea Doria and sails from postwar Sicily to a country he has seen only in the movies. Arriving at Ellis Island knowing no English, Mike and his family set out to build a life in America, fulfilling the last wish of his father, Vincenzo. In Los Angeles, Mike confronts prejudice, cultural confusion, and the pressure to succeed. In 1968, he is drafted into the U.S. Army and serves in Vietnam with the First Infantry Division—the same unit that once captured his father during World War II. Through military service, education, citizenship, and a career in California law enforcement, Mike fulfills the dream his father could not. Told with candor and hope, Vincenzo’s Last Wish is a testament to perseverance, identity, and the enduring power of family in shaping the American Dream. Readers who appreciate immigrant stories, vivid cultural detail, and thoughtful explorations of prejudice and identity will connect with Mike’s compelling narrative.
