Description
After raising four kids and serving as a pastor for over 30 years, I've come to see how indispensable the voice of a father is in the lives of people. Following many funerals, I've often overheard people say, "I wish I could ask dad about. . ." or "I wonder what dad would say . . ." This book was born from a desire to share the collective voice of fathers throughout the ages to the next generation. It seems the transmission belt of wisdom and love has been somewhat broken. This is a small effort into rebuilding that connection. I wrote it from years of teaching, parenting and imparting identity, love and wisdom to my own children and those I've been privileged to spiritually father. Life can seem complicated, however there are only seven critical areas of decision making. If you make the right decisions about God, attitude, authority, pleasure, relationships, production, and adversity, you will live life well. Each of these short chapters begins with a memorable "dad saying" addressing one aspect of these critical topics. Each chapter ends with study helps from the Bible and action steps to help implement the wisdom of each section. It is the perfect tool for family instruction time together. We've included other quotes from fathers throughout the ages that represent the collective canon of dad wisdom and wit. Of course, we couldn't complete the book without a few dad jokes thrown in. My prayer is that a new generation of fathers, mothers and mentors would use this work to teach wisdom through relationship to those under their care. And those without these critical relationships could rediscover this knowledge for themselves and they would grow into the people God created them to be.
