Over a two-year period during World War II, more than 150 U.S. bomber aircraft — crippled by mechanical failure or enemy firepower over Nazi-occupied territory — made emergency landings in Sweden, and their crews (about 1,200) were interned in Sweden under the terms of international law.
Hundreds of other Americans also found themselves in Sweden during the war, including scores of undercover agents who worked for the Office of Strategic Services (the immediate predecessor of the CIA), as well as dozens of foreign correspondents who covered developments in the region for U.S.-based news organizations.
Henry Luce, then-publisher of TIME magazine, was once asked how his reporters were able to get news from inside Nazi Germany. He said “mostly from Stockholm.”
Other Americans, including hundreds of diplomats at the American Legation in Stockholm, worked long hours in the sunshine and snow of Sweden to promote U.S. interests — sometimes in concert with but often against the prevailing interests of the Swedish state.
This book, then, is their story — the result of years of research in the field and at archival institutions in Sweden and the United States, including the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and the National Library in Stockholm, where sources included Swedish newspapers from the period and recently declassified U.S. government documents related to the American presence in Sweden during the war.
