As we join him on his idealistic search for wisdom — traversing borders, cultures, languages, religions, and various stations of prosperity and poverty — his prophets appear as rural farmers, fishermen, grandmothers, stoners, and tribesmen. Although their teachings vary widely, the one constant they offer in villages uncorrupted by the trappings of the modern world is a spirit of hospitality and kindness that affirms the innate goodness of the human race.
