Park Tudor students have conducted and transcribed more than 400 oral history accounts from veterans and civilians, from America and abroad, who have served in support of our country's war efforts. A majority of these accounts are from World War II veterans and represent a kaleidoscope of experiences in the European & Mediterranean Theaters, and in the Pacific Theater. Some stories included in this volume have been told many times, some have been told only twice - once to a wife, and then sixty-plus years later to the interviewer. When interviews were conducted with veterans at the 2004 WWII Memorial Dedication in Washington, D.C., some veterans said, "I really don't have anything to tell - certainly nothing more than fifteen minutes in length." Yet, they were amazed an hour later when they left the interview their families were astonished by their stories, and they planned to re-interview when they got home. Oral histories can present and preserve convincing evidence. It is not unusual for dates of some events to err, but traumatic events are often saved as "flashbulb" memories (specific events, feelings of fear, and past images appear very real). Oral history also has a social message. It "provides a more realistic and fair reconstruction of the past," away from the command level of a war, and represents all walks of life, including "conditions, recreations, and morale of other ranks in the lower deck." The stories in this Words of War anthology do indeed represent veterans from all walks of from artist-engineers to infantrymen, from seamen and cooks to radio operators and navigators, from private first class to lieutenant commander. All answered their country's call, and no in 2009, they share their incredible stories. Such "oral evidence...makes for a history which is not just richer, more vivid, and heart-rending, but truer." 306 page hard cover with many photos.
