He plans to take over the Cimarron Ranch by any means necessary, as it dovetails with property he already owns. Milet is beaten in court and resorts to kidnapping and extortion, involving Fred Bass as the Cimarron Ranch’s only capable enforcer. During the conflict, Bass discovers that the Ranch blacksmith is not at all what he seems and, in fact, has a family vendetta against August Miller from his time in Europe going back decades. The brief romance between Bass and Miller’s wife, Rachel, ultimately crumbles and leaves the young man jilted and dejected. He decides to leave the Cimarron Ranch and join with friends who have a plan to find their riches in an illegal manner. Bass survives, riddled with remorse and guilt, and rides off to a more promising horizon.
