As tough a business as pro wrestling is, it’s even harder to get very far in the world of extreme, hardcore mat action. There’s no rules. Anything goes. Not much of that clean, scientific stuff in federations like Xtreme Pro Wrestling, Combat Zone Wrestling, or the like. Weapons get used. People get hurt. More than anything else, this style obliterates any argument about wrestling being “fake.” Still, just as extreme wrestling has long established (at least since the days of Extreme Championship Wrestling), there’s always going to be a subset of fans that call it great – and the wrestlers that make it so. Including the woman we meet here. That’s right: while many women in wrestling, even only counting those who get in the ring at all, tend to stick to the mat-based amateur-type competition, that wasn’t good enough for Mickie Knuckles. She dreamt of getting dirty. She wanted to go hardcore. She wanted to hurt, and didn’t mind getting hurt even worse. It took far too long, but Knuckles proved, and still does, that she could take the punishment as well and usually better than most men. For decades, Knuckles has established herself as a true icon in hardcore wrestling. The broken bones, the lifelong back injury, a few dozen concussions….she took them all and got right back up to battle her way to the top. But the pain of hardcore wrestling would be relatively serene compared to what Knuckles faced outside the ring. One abusive relationship after another, beginning as a child and continuing into her adulthood. Seeing far too many of her wrestling colleagues pass away young, sometimes caused by their in-ring work. Depressive episodes that nearly caused her to take her life. Yes, it’s a story of pain, suffering, sacrifice, so much gone wrong. But Knuckles’ tale is ultimately one of triumph. It’s the story of a woman with a dream, an ambition that many looked down upon for decades, and still do, but mattered enough to her. It’s a tome of a woman who beat the opponents and all the odds, turned a dream into reality, and never quite until she found a way to the top of the most unlikely place, especially for a lady: the world of extreme hardcore wrestling. A two-decade veteran of hardcore wrestling, Mickie Knuckles has wrestled all over the country and elsewhere in the world, mainly in the land of hardcore (as in, no holds barred, all weapons, no rules) wrestling. Mainly battling – and defeating – men during her career, she briefly competed in the Total Nonstop Action promotion. A lifelong wrestling fan and award-winning journalist, Jason Norman teaches college English in southeastern Virginia.
