The doctrine of Hell is a hellacious doctrine to many believers, both Christian and non-Christian alike. Non-Christians believe that a God who would subject people to eternal unremitting torture for all eternity is a god as evil as the devil himself. Christians, while accepting this, try not to talk about it a lot. Not many Hell Fire sermons like those Jonathan Edwards preached are making the rounds nowadays. How could God torment people for an infinite amount of time for sins of finite consequence? Besides the problem of Hell's duration and intensity, what about those who have never heard the gospel? What does God do with them? Does God send people in those parts of the world to Hell for not believing in Jesus when they haven't even so much as heard of Jesus? How could a loving God do that? And what about babies? Where does God send babies when they die? In this book, Evan Minton explains that the doctrine of Hell is not incompatible with the goodness of God. Many of our objections to God's goodness stem from a misunderstanding of what The Bible actually says about Hell. For example, the biblical evidence is quite strong that rather than being an eternal torture chamber, Hell is actually an execution chamber! God annihilates the wicked. Therefore, it is not the case that He "tortures people forever". When one takes off their cultural blinders and looks at the biblical data afresh, one finds that much of what we've been taught about Hell is wrong, and that it's these wrong ideas that have given God a bad rep.
