An Island of Hope in a Sea of Despair . . .
A Journey to Meekness is a collection of short prayer poems and reflections on mysticism and mercy in which three themes are emphasized: stillness, silence, and service. If A Journey to Meekness is read slowly, by the end the reader will find that they have come face-to-face with feelings and thoughts within themselves that they had no idea were there. In that way, this humble book can be a spiritual retreat, leaving the person with new insights for her or his own pilgrimage.
Author Gerard Thomas Straub, an award-winning author, photographer, and filmmaker, is founder and president of Pax et Bonum Communications, which produces films and books celebrating the spirituality of St. Francis and concern for the poor, social justice, prayer, and the integrity of creation. He primarily lives in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where he operates the Santa Chiara Children’s Center, home to forty-three abandoned children.
Gerry is a former Hollywood television producer at NBC, CBS, and ABC. He has written and directed twenty-four documentary films in the most poverty-stricken sections of India, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, Peru, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Jamaica, and The Philippines. Three of those films aired on PBS stations. Gerry is also an accomplished photographer; a film featuring his photography was narrated by Martin Sheen.
Gerry has had eight books published. The Sun and Moon Over Assisi won a first place Catholic Press Association Book Award for spirituality in 2001. The Loneliness and Longing of St. Francis was a winner in the Spirituality category of the 2015 Association of Catholic Publishers’ “Excellence in Publishing Awards.” Mr. Straub has spoken at more than 250 Catholic churches, high schools, and universities across the United States, as well as in Canada, France, Italy, and Hungary. He has received three honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of his work on behalf of the poor. Gerry is a Secular Franciscan.
