Discipleship is foundational to the Christian life. We begin a relationship with Christ by faith, then grow in our faith through discipleship.Biblical discipleship equips believers to mature and motivates them to stand for their faith. Discipleship is the spiritual development of an individual but is most effective in community. In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul admonished Timothy, “The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.” Then Paul modeled that through his discipleship of Timothy. As Paul began his second missionary journey, he met a young man named Timothy in Lystra. This began a unique relationship that developed into a bond that was so close Paul considered Timothy to be like a son to him.As Paul spoke into his young student’s life, he taught him the fundamentals of faith, sound doctrine, godly character, and perseverance of faith. Paul taught him by modeling his faith, by including Timothy in his work, by affirming the work of God in his life, by sending him on ministry assignments, and through letters. Paul’s discipleship of Timothy helped to prepare him for the pastoral work to which God called him.Timothy would be key in exposing false teaching, organizing the church, and discipling the next generation.That’s the transformative power of the work of Christ and the impact of discipleship.
