Franklin B. Hough was the first to document the early history of Akwesasne, also known as St. Regis. He visited the community in 1852, and interviewed the chiefs, missionary, and various residents as part of the research for his book, A History of St. Lawrence andFranklin Counties, New York. He returned several times to gather information for the New York State Census of 1855, 1865, and 1875. The materials he wrote and collected about the community and its leaders have been gathered here in one volume. Darren Bonaparte is the co-author (along with Rosemary Bonaparte) of The History of the St. Regis Catholic Church. He is author of Creation & Confederation: The Living History of the Iroquois and A Lily Among Thorns: The Mohawk Repatriation of Kateri Tekahkwí:tha. Darren is the creator of the website, The Wampum Chronicles, and a frequent cultural presenter at schools, universities, libraries, museums, and historic sites in the United States and Canada. He and his wife Jennifer live in Cornwall, Ontario.
