Ganske certainly risked and nearly lost his life—before he married and had any children. While he was only on active duty in enemy territory for half of November 1862, his regiment was called into battle formation more than once. Ganske participated on the First White River Expedition; an aborted operation conducted by the Army of the Southwest early in the Vicksburg Campaign. Ganske’s unit, the 29th Wisconsin Regiment of Volunteers, suffered only one casualty from enemy fire during this time. However, there were many other dangers. Disease caused more disability and death in the Civil War than combat. Ganske was one of these victims. This book will examine the daily life of soldiers in the 29th Wisconsin Volunteers and the horrors of war from a boots-on-the-ground perspective.
