Arc of a Diver: a biographic novel - 6096

Arc of a Diver by Mark Woytowich was written in 1991 and won first prize in the adult novel category in the 1992 Literary Awards Contest of the Pacific Northwest Writers Conference. An unpublished 479-page typewritten manuscript, it is a black comedy of an attempted suicide and resurrection of a New York playwright. “It’s an internal play in the first person. I was a fledgling playwright and the time, so it’s based on some real things.” The playwright narrating the story is tormented, driven to attempt suicide by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge (July 1983, really happened), hence the title, Arc of a Diver. After that, he begins the long journey toward personal redemption. Mark looked for an agent, positive responses - no cigar. Then he gave up, going on to exploring the wild Olympic Mountains and eventually self publishing Where Waterfalls and Wild Things Are, sharing detailed descriptions of explorations of canyons, waterfalls and swimming holes thoughout the Southeastern Olympic Mountains. Professionally Mark continued writing for clients, local publications and converting his storytelling skills into video documentaries for causes and showcasing community leaders. In recent years, he’d discussed publishing Arc of a Diver… no actions. The typewritten manuscript - never digitized - lay in a box. Who would re-type the 480 pages? Still, Mark’s strong message of hope overcoming darkness could be of help, as many grieve suicidal losses or are struggling. Then, the unthinkable: In May, 2022, Mark had a heart attack and didn’t survive. Since this is post death publication, best decision to publish Mark’s words as is. Hopefully, this story reaches those who need it and lighten with humor difficult.
