Arlo and Zug: Teaching Consent to Young Children - 3987

Arlo and Zug are early elementary school students, who are returning to school after summer break. The two main characters wake up with similar emotions. They are excited to see friends, and feeling ready for their first day back at school. As they arrive at school, the reader observes the two characters interacting throughout the day. Arlo is more introverted, and Zug is more extroverted. Throughout the book Zug wants to give hugs and hold hands, and Arlo, wants to spend time with their friend, while also having personal space respected. The book explores how these actions make Arlo feel, and highlights difficulties with putting words to human feelings. Both Arlo and Zug experience the feeling of “butterflies in their tummy”. Zug’s butterflies feel like excitement and Arlo’s butterflies feel like nerves. With the help of "looking inward" and speaking with their butterfly friends, the two friends learn to communicate, and respect each other’s boundaries.
